Distributed background job platform

For an IoT client, I developed a platform for distributed background jobs. It combines persistent messaging, workers that process the jobs and an interface for the operations team.

01Challenge

Distribute background jobs across workers and manage their processing through one platform.

02My contribution

I worked on the architecture, messaging, backend and interface, as well as service orchestration, tests and CI/CD pipelines.

03Outcome

The platform brings job distribution and processing together with an interface for the operations team.

Distributing background jobs across workers

The client needed a custom platform for distributed background jobs. Messages had to be stored persistently and processed by worker nodes, with a shared interface for the people running the platform.

I worked on the system architecture and software development, agreeing the technical requirements with the people involved.

Messaging, application development and operations

NATS and JetStream handled messaging, while PostgreSQL stored the data. The backend used NestJS and Node.js, and the interface used React.

I also worked on how the services ran together, maintained the CI/CD pipelines and tested the application. The client and internal application details remain confidential.
